I'd love to. I have a lost uncle up there. He was killed in a plane crash, in the '50's and my mom is really hoping they find the bodies, some day. My sister is named for him. I sent off an email to the Stars and Stripes (no reply) about this article. [link] They crashed on the steepest slopes. Mt Silverthorne is at the head of a glacier, east of Denali. Nasty looking area.
Only that he (Cpl. Gail W. Daugherty) is in the list of passengers and was on the flight with that soldier's uncle. I dug up all the old Army reports, from the day they went missing, plus a couple of possible sightings of a wreck there. I found what I "want" to believe is the wreck, on Google Earth. I asked an editor at the Stars and Stripes about that soldier and his expedition, but no answer. Going to write another editor. My mom is hoping it gets uncovered, like another plane did, that disappeared, very close to the same time. It melted out of a glacier. It was a big Army operation and they lost 3 planes that month. Two have been recovered, one hasn't.
You should call them, rather than writing. Or get the contact info for the soldier. Its scary that planes could go down and no one knew where. I'm thinking that probably wouldn't be happening today with the technology.
Thanks, good idea. I was trying to get the soldier's contact info. I want to know if they actually went. I know they didn't get to wreck, but did they find anything or get close...... The wreckage was seen, the day after the crash, but it's in a really wicked area. The side of the mountain they crashed on is near vertical. Search parties were called off because it would cause more deaths, but there is gear nowadays.
of course I just love the thirds
a soothing image.

Does the article relate to your uncle?
